Naming Strategy #1: Don’t name the company after yourself

It can be very tempting to name your new business after yourself. After all, who doesn’t want to see their name up in lights. Letting everyone know that you are the owner of your particular business, however, will likely not have any discernable impact on your success. Instead, choose a cool business name that defines who you are and provides you with the persona you need to get off the ground.

Naming a business after yourself can also put you into a box that is difficult to escape. Think about the potential path your business may take. What if you add owners/partners? What troubles will you run into if you decide to sell? It will be far easier to sell a business that has an attractive and intriguing name like Goodyear than it will be to sell one named Johnson Tires.
